What is a Bass Saxophone?

I remembered thinking the Baritone Sax was the manliest reed in Jazz Band. That is, until I heard an old recording of Boyd Raeburn who was an Avant Garde Band Leader and Bass Saxophone player in the 1940s.  A Bass Sax is a behemoth of an instrument, 2nd in size only to the freakish, Subcontrabass Tubax, but we won't go into that one, here. Suffice it to say, the Bass Saxophone, will add those deeper low tones you're looking for in those disonant voicings of an entire sax section, as well as provide colorful solo capabilities and rhythm enhancement. In fact, in the early days of jazz, Bass Saxophones were used in place of tubas because the sound was much easier to record. Bass Saxophones are not nearly as commony found and heard as a the baritone sax, but then again, that is what makes them such a desirable instrument for some.

The Bass Saxopone, because it is made of so much material, is not usually found on sale very cheaply. Fortuntely, the competition on auction Saxophone Sales has greatly improved your chances of finding an affordable sale on one. Check back daily, as the auction sales come and go quite frequently.
