What is a Sopranino Saxophone?
The Sopranino Saxophone is the 2nd smallest of all of the Saxophone instruments. It is in fact exactly one octave higher than an Alto Sax and is tuned in the key of Eb. If you can imagine the sound of a Soprano Sax, the Sopranino makes a very sweet sound. Not that the Sopranino Sax is restricted, but it is mostly used in orchestras. It can also be played in Jazz or a Saxophone Ensemble or orchestra. The Sopranino Saxophone sort of reminded me of the piccolo trumpet of the orchestral sax family until I learned of the Sopranissimo which is truly the highest pitched of all of the saxophones.
Most of the Sopranino Saxophones you see, are straight shaped, but that doesn't mean they all are. There are a couple of brands that come with a curved bell and you'll find them here on these auction pages. So, don't assume a Sopranino Saxophone is something else only because it's bell is curved. Take a look at the Orsi brand which is curved, but still a Sopranino Sax and sounds nothing like an alto or soprano.
I've been told that these instruments are quite fun to play.
